RPJC Hosts Book Talk: Thursday, March 27, 2008

AUTHOR DISCUSSES GLOBALIZATION, DISSENT AND SOCIAL CONTROL

The Redwood Peace & Justice Center hosts a book talk with Luis Fernandez, author of Policing Dissent: Social Control and the Anti-Globalization Movement on Thursday, March 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Northtown Books, 957 H Street in Arcata.

Luis Fernandez received his Ph.D. from the School of Justice Studies and Social Inquiry at Arizona State University. His research and teaching interests include protest policing, social movements, globalization, and issues in the social control of late modernity. He has recently been researching the securitization of the Mexican-Guatemalan border as it links to U.S. immigration policy. In his book, Policing Dissent, Fernandez examines the intersections of globalization, dissent, and late-modern social control.

19th Annual Beer & Bread: Friday, March 28, 2008

BREWERS & BAKERS OFFER A TASTE OF HUMBOLDT AT BENEFIT FOR RPJC

The ever-popular Beer and Bread benefit returns on Friday, March 28, 2008 to the Arcata Veterans Memorial Hall at 14th and J Streets in Arcata from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Breweries from Humboldt and beyond will whet the whistle with many varieties of beer for the tasting, and local bakeries will offer up the staff of life, with a few schmears thrown in for good measure. A nominal fee at the door ($15 for individuals, $25 for couples) allows attendees unlimited tastes of beer and bread for the evening.

The event, a benefit for the Redwood Peace and Justice Center, has been made possible by the kindness of many brewers, bakers, and individual volunteers. The funds raised at this year's Beer and Bread benefit will go toward RPJC's goal of securing a community space for the use of local peace and justice activists. For more information call 826-2511.

RPJC 2007 Holiday Dinner/Auction a Success!

The Redwood Peace & Justice Center made good on the theme of its 6th Annual Holiday Gift Auction and Dinner, CELEBRATING OUR ROOTS: GROWING PEACE AND JUSTICE, held at the Arcata Community Center on November 30, 2007. The "Roots," long-time labor and social justice activists Noel and Ina Harris, Peace & Justice Honorees of the evening, were honored in a big way. And the growth of the RPJC will definitely be facilitated by the $7,000 that was raised at the annual benefit. Many who attended the event noted the warmth created by the light decor, and even more commented on the good vibes and connectedness experienced annually at this event. RPJC would like to thank the many businesses and individuals whose generous donations made this benefit possible:
